Today, 31st December 2018, sees the start of the principal #centenary commemorative events for the sinking of HMY #Iolaire around 2am on 1st January 1919. Two such events will be webcast at www.iolaireonline.org The ship ran aground on the Beasts of Holm, a reef that has ever since marked by the tall iron post seen here. Despite being only 20 yards from the shore over 200 returning #WW1 servicemen were drowned within sight of the lights of nearby #Stornoway. The impact of this event was huge locally, yet until only very recently few people outwith the Western Isles knew of this tragedy. There will be commemorative programmes on BBC ALBA tomorrow (Tuesday) evening (& later available on iPlayer). You’ll likely see news media coverage as the Prince of Wales (Duke of Rothesay when in Scotland) and Nicola Sturgeon will attend Tuesday’s event at the location shown here.
