In Winchester’s Great Hall can be found this rather enormous bronze statue of Queen Victoria sitting on her Imperial Throne. It was apparently sculpted by Sir Alfred Gilbert RA. It was presented to Hampshire in 1887 by the then High Sheriff of Hampshire to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The statue depicts Queen Victoria in her full Imperial Majesty days of the Queen Empress. To give an idea of scale the top of the head of a 5’10” tall person would be below the level of Queen Victoria’s knees. The statue is believed to have stood somewhere prominent in Winchester city centre until a number of years after Victoria’s death in 1901 it was relocated to a corner of the Great Hall when Victoria was no longer in vogue! #QueenVictoria #GreatHall #Winchester #statue
