Going ‘home’ (temporarily)

Next week I shall be making a spur-of-the-moment return visit to the Outer Hebrides, arriving on Tuesday evening.

I’m looking forward to catching up with a couple of friends during my short stay, and will include some time visiting the Uists and Benbecula which I didn’t manage to get to whilst living in Lewis last winter. Booking the ferries and accommodation has proven to be a nightmare; whilst I’m delighted to have found somewhere in Leverburgh, I should have preferred to be a little closer to Stornoway!

  • Tuesday and Wednesday nights – Leverburgh, Harris
  • Thursday and Friday nights – Daliburgh, South Uist

The blessed Craig of that ilk has jumped at the opportunity to see the Hebrides in summertime.  On his two previous visits (under different circumstances) the weather was less than favourable, so could someone please organise a couple of dry days or better still sunshine and blue skies? Thanks everso!

  1. At least there’s an excellent restaurant at Leverburgh Pier. And some smashing beaches all down the west coast of Harris. Female staff feeling slightly blue as she wont manage to get to the island this year. That’s what happens when the gas boiler goes phut – it gets expensive!!!

  2. Foolish boy….if you had liased I have empty house which you could have stayed over as I am back in Somerset still nursing back patient and summer hols kids!!! Not back until 26th August so guess can’t offer Gravir hospitality this time around…safe journey, enjoy…RJG

  3. I’ll do my best to oblige pussycat mio! I’ll be twittering as per, but I’ll try to blog it properly this time (since I failed utterly over the Orkney & Shetland expedition – somewhat awed by Marion’s travelogue). I’ve done the Uists some years ago, but only in pouring rain, so I hope we have some (at least) dry conditions. Hope your throat improves F-A-S-T!

  4. Oh bound to be. When does Mister Fourex ever tip over into illogicality? Purrish the thought…😀
Make sure you document the Uists to within a whisker, we’ve never been there and anticipate a blow-by-blow account if you’ll purrdon the expurression…
I purrfer vicarious journeys to the real thing…just been to the v.e.t. in St Monans and my wee throat’s sore.

  5. Well if you look at it in the round Jill, it’s a week away from home, so quite a holiday really! Plus, there aren’t that many people in Lewis & Harris to touch base with, so instead of four days in there, we’re heading to the Uists & Benbecula too! I think there’s a logic there somewhere 🙂

  6. That’s quite a journey for a brief stay! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Have a great trip!

  7. Just a tad, about 1.5 hours depending on traffic conditions which, in August, won’t be fabulous. Bloomin’ grockles!!!!!!! 🙂

  8. I got all excited by the title, then read on… So, no Return of The Purrodigal just yet!
Leverburgh does sound a teensy bit out of town😆
